SMART Boards can make your ideas come to life with the ability to write directly on the screen and save them for the future.
Each SMART Board room features a large screen, 75 inch SMART Board and wireless mouse and keyboard. The rooms also have large whiteboards.
Group Study Rooms and Studios are reserved for use by current students, faculty, and staff.
Use only dry erase markers on whiteboards.
Markers may be checked out from the circulation desk on the first floor of O'Shaughnessy-Frey in St. Paul or the main desk in Keffer Library in Minneapolis.
All group study rooms in O’Shaughnessy-Frey (St. Paul) and Keffer (Minneapolis) have a computer with standard Microsoft Office software installed (Word, Excel, etc.).
As a courtesy to others using the space after you, please do not power down the computer or disconnect cables from the computer. The computers are used throughout the day, are low powered and utilize power saving modes when not in use.
Also, please do not turn off the screens.
In O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library (St. Paul) group study spaces with large screens are equipped with wireless keyboards and mice allowing everyone around the table to "take control."
To conserve battery life when not in use, On/Off switches are found on the upper left of the keyboard and the underside of the mouse.
Note: Each keyboard and mouse are paired with the computer in the room and may not be moved to other locations.
If you arrive in a room where the keyboard and/or mouse have been turned off, or the keyboard and mouse are not responding, please check the on/off switch located on the keyboard in the upper right, and on the underside of the mouse. If they still fail to respond you may request new batteries from the Circulation Desk on the first floor of O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library.
Note: There are no wireless keyboards or mice in Keffer Library in Minneapolis.
The SMART Board is ready to provide a drawing surface, a large, touch enabled computer screen, or display your own laptop or device. Touch the black bar at the bottom of the screen to bring up a menu to switch between inputs and modes.
The SMART Board’s display will go to sleep after a period of inactivity. There is a power button on the right side of the display panel.
To change inputs on the SMART Board, touch the black bar at the bottom of the screen just above the pen and eraser tray. That will bring up the various inputs and apps. You can choose Whiteboard for a drawing surface, or input for a computer.
To use the SMART Board as a Whiteboard touch the black bar at the bottom of the screen and choose Whiteboard from the Mode Panel that comes up.
To use the Windows 10 desktop, touch the black bar at the bottom of the screen and choose Display Port from the Favorites column. If Display Port is not listed, choose input and then Display Port.
There is an HDMI cable with adapters hanging on the wall to the right of the screen. If you need an additional adapter you may check one out from Circulation on 1st Floor.
After your laptop or device is connected, touch the black bar at the bottom of the screen, choose INPUT, and then HDMI 1.
To use the SMART Board as a Whiteboard, touch the black bar at the bottom of the screen and choose Whiteboard from the menu panel that comes up.
Members of your group may scan the QR code in the bottom corner to access the Whiteboard on their own mobile devices. This allows them to join in on their mobile devices by drawing and saving the board after the end of the session.
It should go without saying but:
USE ONLY THE SMART MARKERS AND YOUR FINGERS TO TOUCH THE BOARD!
The SMART Board has four color markers and an eraser that are stored along the bottom. Since there are four markers, up to four people may draw on the board at the same time! Use the tip to draw and the flat end to erase or tap buttons. The SMART Board is a touch screen so you can use your fingers and hand to swipe and touch controls.
To change the style of drawing lines use the drawing menu located on the left hand side of the screen.
If you run out of drawing space, use your hand to swipe to the left. This will move your work to the left and provide clear space on the right. To go back swipe to the right.
If you need to clear the Whiteboard to start from a blank screen, or clear it from a previous group, touch the black bar at the bottom of the screen to bring up the input and mode menu. Then touch the "Clear All" button.
To use the SMART Board as a PC display, touch the black bar at the bottom of the screen and choose Input from the menu panel that comes up.
Display Port is the default, in-room computer but you may use an HDMI cable to connect your own device to the HDMI 2 port on the right side of the screen.
Log into the PC using your usual St. Thomas username and password. Be sure to log off before leaving the room.
When connected to the SMART Board, a computer essentially becomes a 75 inch Microsoft Surface Tablet! You can use touch to move the cursor around, click on icons, buttons, and links, and even bring up the on-screen keyboard from the system tray in the lower right near the time.
You can use the SMART markers as a stylus and use the Windows 10 writing feature located in the system tray in the lower right corner.
Note: For touch mode, if you are connecting your own device you will need to use a Display Port to HDMI, Lightning Port to HDMI, or HDMI to HDMI cable. If your device only has a VGA connection it will not enable touch mode.
Please do not disconnect any cables or equipment in the room. Many of our rooms with large monitors provide an HDMI port as well as a USB port to connect to.
In O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library rooms 110, 312B, 421 and 422, there is an HDMI and USB port cable on the right side of the screen. In O'Shaughnessy-Frey SMART Board rooms you can connect to the inputs on the right side of the screen or using the cables provided in the room. Currently there is not a method to connect to the screens in Keffer group studies.
All inputs to the large screens are HDMI so you will need an HDMI cable to start with. In O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library, the Circulation desk on 1st floor has cables for check out in both 6 foot and 10 foot lengths.
If your laptop or device does not have an HDMI port, you will need an adapter. Again, the Circulation desk has some of the most popular adapters available for check out. These all convert to HDMI so you will need BOTH an HDMI cable and one of the following adapters.
Once you have connected your device to the port provided you will need to use the remote (or, in the case of the SMART Boards) the on screen selector to change the input. Usually the in-room computer is Input 1 and your device will be Input 2.
You will only need a regular HDMI cable.
You will need a VGA to HDMI adapter. Connect the audio to your headphone or line out port if you want to play audio on the large screen.
Note that the HDMI adapter requires power provided via USB so you will need to connect the included USB plug to a port on your device.
From the VGA to HDMI adapter, connect the VGA, audio, and USB to your laptop. Then connect the HDMI cable to the adapter and screen.
You will need a USB Type C to HDMI adapter
You will need a Lightning to HDMI adapter AND your own charging cable with plug.
Note that the HDMI adapter requires its own power so not only will you need your own charging cable, access to an outlet might not be convenient. Our SMART Board rooms allow screen mirroring via Air Play, no cables needed!
Plug one end of your charging cable into an outlet and the other end into the Lightning Adapter. Then plug one end of the HDMI cable into the screen and the other into the Lightning Adapter. Then plug the Lightning Adapter into your device.
