Call Number: PT2603.R397 B3 2018
"Volker Schlöndorff transported Bertolt Brecht's 1918 debut play to contemporary West Germany for this vicious experiment in adaptation, seldom seen for nearly half a century. Oozing with brutish charisma, Rainer Werner Fassbinder embodies the eponymous anarchist poet, who feels that bourgeois society has rejected him and sets off on a schnapps-soaked rampage. Hewing faithfully to Brecht's text, Schlöndorff juxtaposes the theatricality of the prose with bare-bones, handheld 16 mm camera work, which gives immediacy to this savage story of rebellion. Featuring a supporting cast drawn from Fassbinder's troupe of theater actors that also includes Margarethe von Trotta, 'Baal' demonstrates the uncompromising vision of its director, a trailblazer of the New German Cinema."--Container.

Fassbinder's distinctive version of Jean Genet's Querelle de Brest is presented within the smouldering, surreal landscape of a single set. The action revolves around Querelle, a sailor whose magnetic charm and physical beauty ensnare all around him. The dark romantic mystery-thriller plot is the vehicle for Fassbinder to portray carnal and spiritual love not as opposites but parallels, his central character emerging from self-serving narcissism into a world where pain and communion are one. Acting as chorus-commentators are Seblon, the film's only intellectual voice - a mouthpiece for Fassbinder and Genet - and Lysiane, a Utopian Everywoman. In a brothel in the port of Brest, proprietor Nono is known for gambling with his customers for sex with his wife, Lysiane, or Nono himself. An argument about homosexuality soon leads Querelle to murder his fellow smuggler, Vic. Querelle then loses on purpose to Nono and discovers he enjoys this new relationship. Meanwhile, fellow sailor Gil, who looks like Querelle's brother, murders one of his colleagues after the man publicly attacks Gil's manhood. Wanted by the police for both his own crime and Querelle's, Gil goes into hiding. The Red Cartoons anthology showcases the varying styles and thematic concerns of a group of artists who worked at East Germany's DEFA studio from the '50s until 1992. The 16 shorts on Red Cartoons come primarily from the '70s and '80s and average three minutes or less. Some resemble whimsical comic-book one-pagers; others are more like editorials. And watched in chronological order, they tell the story of the mounting frustration in the GDR in the years before the Berlin Wall fell. In Hans Moser and Thomas Rosie's "Hello," for example, a man travels from the city to the country to the mountains to the beach to the desert, looking for a solitude that proves less than satisfying when he finally finds it. And in Otto Sacher's "Star And Flower," a man on the ground neglects a flower because he wants to reach a star, while a man in the sky does the opposite. These are simple, universal ideas: critiques of dissatisfaction that sympathize with the irritated while also reminding them that restlessness is a common human condition, not a uniquely socialist one But others of these Red Cartoons make a more political point, especially the work of Klaus Georgi and his occasional collaborator Lutz Stutzner. Georgi's "The Full Circle" depicts people wearing gas masks because of the pollution emitted by a gas-mask factory. His "Consequence" shows an audience applauding an anti-pollution film, then heading out to their exhaust-spewing automobiles. Georgi and Stutzner's collaborations "The Breakdown" and "The Monument" take direct aim at the establishment: the former through the absurdist image of a tiny car towing a convoy of bloated political leaders' vehicles, and the latter through a vignette of a statue changing position after it receives a phone call from the party. And Stutzner's 1990 "Island Joke" exemplifies what these DEFA animators do so well, by encapsulating the ridiculousness of a failing state in a scene of three freezing, naked men using a bolt of cloth to make a flag they can salute.
