In the Advanced Search, you can search by business type (keyword, NAICS, or SIC code) and geography to get some industry information at the state level.
Mergent Intellect This link opens in a new window
You can use Mergent Intellect to build a location-specific (state, city) company list using a NAICS code. It won't include all private companies, but it can give you some idea of the number of companies in an industry.
