Since many Irish families immigrated to the United States piecemeal (e.g. a father one year, a wife and children the next), it was a common for family members to lose track of one another. When this occurred, "personal" notices frequently were placed in newspapers with a heavy Irish-American readership. These notices often link a name with a location both in Ireland and in the United States.
