OER: Open Educational Resources: Ensuring Accessibility

A collection of OER repositories, directories of learning objects, Open Access sources, and guides on creating OER textbooks.

Checking Accessibility in Other's Resources

When searching for open educational resources, please keep accessibility in mind.

  • Look for an accessibility statement referring to WCAG 2.0 AA.
  • Search for accessibility in the item description and in the advanced search features.
  • Look for a VPAT (Voluntary Product Accessibility Template)
  • Assess usability in the Canvas LMS

Creating Accessible Resources

Think about students with disabilities as you begin creating your OER.

Students who use screen readers or other assistive technologies will benefit if you pay attention to hierarchy in your textbook, describe images with alt tags, caption your videos, and include transcripts, and follow other best practices.
