Open Educational Resources (OER)

This guide helps faculty understand Open Educational Resources (OER), explore different types available, learn how to find them, and how to connect with the liaison librarian for search support.

About Using Library Resources

The St. Thomas Libraries subscribe to a wealth of materials you may wish to incorporate into your course assignments. Students can access these resources at no cost. While technically not Open Education Resources, they do help to curb the cost of purchasing expensive textbooks. The Libraries provide details about identifying and utilizing persistent links to resources to provide authenticated access to library licensed content. The Libraries have two options to help faculty assign and deliver course materials: Resource Lists and Course Reserves

Resource Lists in Canvas

Collaborate with library staff to build and deliver a list of low- or zero-cost course materials in Canvas. Library staff provide access via our e-collections or services like digitization and purchasing, and help you locate open textbooks (OERs).

Faculty can be very involved in building their Resource Lists or can provide a list of readings and we'll build a list for you.

Option 1: Submit a Course Materials Services Request Form

Option 2: Complete a Self-Paced Canvas Course on Resource Lists

Course Reserves

The Course Reserves service places physical items on shelves behind the library services' desk for short term loans. This service is also included in Resource Lists. These physical items can be library owned or faculty-supplied. Consult our documentation for more information on getting started with course reserves.
