ARTH 280 Sacred Space: Getting Started

A guide to finding information about sacred spaces across time and space.

Background Information--In Print

Introduction

Welcome to the Art History resource guide! Use this guide to find books, articles, images, and other resources about sacred spaces.

Churches, mosques, temples, stupas, synagogues, and monasteries are among the explicitly architectural manifestations of sacred space, but cemeteries and certain cities have long been considered sacred, and some sacred caves, groves, mountains, and other landscapes have become works of art as well. The University of St. Thomas Libraries have a wealth of information in print and online about architects, artists and their art.  Please contact me if you have need help with your research or to add suggestions to this guide.  For basic introductions, see the Oxford Art Online,  "church," "mosque," "synagogue," "cemetery," "monastery," and "prehistoric Europe."
