English as a Second Language: A Research Guide for Teachers: Finding Articles

This guide includes a selection of resources to help you get started on a research project related to teaching English as a second language.

Looking for ESL classes?

NOTE: If you have found this page from Google, or another internet search engine, and are looking for classes from the ELS Center at St. Thomas, please call 651-962-5990, or visit the website below. (Please don't call or email me--I am not connected to this program and cannot assist people with it.)

    ESL is Worldwide!

  Off-Campus Access

With very few exceptions, UST Libraries resources are available from off-campus.  You will be asked to enter your UST username/password.  This is the username you use for your UST email, not your Banner ID.

  I Found This Citation...

....so how can I get a copy of the article?  We get that question a lot.  We have a link on the library homepage to search just journal titles--it is linked below.  Click on it and type in the title of the journal you are looking for (NOT the article title), and (if UST has access to the journal--in any format) you will get a list of where we have it.  Sometimes it may be online, sometimes only in print at a library, and sometimes it may be in microform in a library. Try it out.

Try these databases

Online databases are an important tool for locating articles and other documents related to your topic.  Try these first.

Some of the articles you find will be available in fulltext online. Sometimes you will see a PDF or HTML link to the article in the results list.  Other times you will need to use the "Get It" button to link to the article.  There may be times when something is only available in print in a library.  You may need to use interlibrary loan (ILLiad) to request those.

  GET IT

GET IT example

Click the GET IT buttons within any of our databases to get the full text of the article (if available).  We don't own every e-journal, but those that we do own will be available through the GET IT button.  Those that aren't available can be requested through ILLiad
